« We will rebuild Notre-Dame Cathedral. All together. » Mr. Emmanuel Macron, President of the French Republic, 15 April 2019.
The President of the French Republic has launched a public appeal to rebuild the cathedral, giving everyone who so wishes the chance to contribute to this formidable show of public support.
Undertaken in 1163, the construction of the cathedral spanned two centuries. For many years, Notre-Dame remained one of the largest Christian buildings in the Western world and is still one of the most emblematic monuments of Paris, France and Europe to this day. Over 12 million visitors flock to the cathedral every year.
On 15 April 2019, a devastating fire destroyed the 12th century frame. The entire roof has suffered damage, and part of the vault and the spire, constructed in the mid-19th century by the architect Viollet-le-Duc, have collapsed. «The fire at Notre-Dame de Paris Cathedral is a tragedy for all French people», said Mr. Franck Riester, Minister of Culture, emphasising the need to rebuild this masterpiece of Gothic architecture as soon as possible.
In the words of Notre-Dame-de-Paris’ most famous admirer, Victor Hugo:
« Time is the architect, the nation is the builder »
